REAL-LIFE APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is a methodical application of matter. It makes our life systematic and orderly by preventing chaos. Mathematics is used by everyone be it a human or an insect. In terms of nature there are countless examples of mathematical applications.

We often curse ‘Math’ for the complex calculations we have to go through and by simply concluding that most of what we’ve learned will never be used in life. Mathematics can be termed as one of the most ‘intelligent’ subjects because it requires a lot of thinking, reasoning, logic and solving based on understanding. Complex formulas and various concepts in Mathematics are like “the witty will have fun, but the stupid won’t get it.”

This article is about proving how mathematics is connected to the real world.

Based on research, we found out real-life uses and applications of different subjects in Mathematics. First let us discuss about the subjects in Mathematics which were never expected to be used in real life. **Calculus** which includes derivatives and integration used to be one of the topics with complex formulas and variations enough to spoil your grades,** Algebra **which was full of alphabets which changed the definition of mathematics moving from numbers to alphabets(the only missing component), **Trigonometry **including sin cos tan raised a question like “WHAT and WHY are they”, **Logarithms** a combination of alphabets and numbers (log10) with so much to remember, **Probability **which seems to be easy but has so many variations and possibilities that ends up confusing, **Statistics** similar to probability used in day-to-day life, **Matrices **easier to solve but complicated to understand. Chapters like Profit and loss, Simple & Compound Interest are basic to understand with it’s application in day to day life.

USE OF THE FOLLOWING CHAPTERS: –

* CALCULUS*– Calculus is a concept used to calculate difference between numbers no matter how small it is. It is divided into Integration and Differentiation. Do you ever think where and why is it used? So it is used by an architect to calculate the amount of materials required to construct structures that are curved in shape like domes and arches. Without calculus it is not possible to estimate the requirements for such structures. Also, Electrical Engineers use calculus to calculate the length of power cables between places that are miles apart. Now we can’t even imagine how complex things become without calculus. Biologists also use calculus to calculate the rate at which microbes expand.

* ALGEBRA*– With the basic use, Algebra is used in Economics, x and y to determine the demand and supply of goods. Algebra makes it easier to DNA and genes with the help of equations. The properties can be easily explained through x and y chromosomes. It is used in Computer Graphics (CG) to determine the movements and functions and design objects. It is easier to understand the concept of CG by taking the example of the game “Mario” which was designed using CG.

* TRIGONOMETRY*– The terms sin cos and tan represent an angular measurement. We are not aware how often we use trigonometry because it is used to find a location for navigation and maps. The other benefits are not experienced by laymen but it is also used to determine the depth of algae underwater and sonar systems. Trigonometric angles are used in the construction of marine ramps. Some professions practice the use everyday!

* LOGARITHMS*– It is difficult to comprehend the use of logarithms but Logarithms simplify complicated numbers through exponents and coefficients. Log table helps us to refer to the corresponding numbers and make calculations less laborious. It is used mainly in computing memory spaces and in computer languages. It can help you calculate numbers smoothly even after ten million!

* PROBABILITY*– Probability is a concept we use in everyday life. For example ‘Should I take a cab or bus to office?’ is something we ask ourselves on a regular basis, and we make the decision using probability. Probability basically tells you the chances of a specific occurrence of an event. The meticulous calculations can be used in determining big events such as the probability of you winning a jackpot or a lottery?!

* STATISTICS*– Statistics, like probability, is a more familiar concept. And like probability, we use statistics in our everyday lives. Population census is an epitome of statistics. To get the demographics of a sample size, statistics plays a very important role with its various functions, for example when determining average and mean estimates.

MATRICES– Matrix is an array of elements processed according to specific needs. In robotic systems, matrices are used to control the movement of robots. Data structures and databases make use of this concept for an organised algorithm.

* MENSURATION*– Mensuration is nothing but measurement of different units. From buying groceries to checking our weight, we use mensuration day in and day out. From determining the body temperature using a thermometer and a barometer to determining the weather, mensuration plays an integral role.

So, now we know how important Mathematics is for our day to day operations for various professions and work-related activities. We are not even aware about the uses and how well we can use them to make life and functions less tedious. And also many tasks would become complicated and difficult to attain. More than learning it depends on how well you apply the uses.
